  1. Hey, Celine and Virginia, Great photos. I'd love to know more about what you did! Any cool stories to relate -- I bet there are. Hoping to see more so I can understand the important work you did -- Tana and Ann said you were rocking! Lois

  2. This mosaic is a classic example of the Studio Habit of Mind, Engage and Persist! It seemed to rain every Wednesday afternoon, yet the Mosaic group just bundled up and kept going. They were always the last group still working after the program ended and have put in two additional days in order to finish what they started.
IN order for students to understand what a mosaic is, the group researched and brought in books and photos of ancient Roman and modern day mosaics (SHOM: Understand Art World).
The youth Developed Craft, such as learning to mix grout and use glass cutting tools (under supervision) and sort glass colors and types to collaborate on the design. In order to EXPRESS that design, the youth had to ENVISION it because a mosaic is made up of tiny squares and the artist must maintain a mental picture in order to succeed in creating a coherent end product! What is most satisfying to all, including Peralta Hacienda, is that this lovely addition to their playground sandbox will be there for many young people to enjoy. From now on when the Athena Project youth who made it come to their neighborhood park, they can proudly point and say, "I helped design and make this mosaic." I think they will be stewards of its upkeep and protect it from vandalism.

  3. WOW, this really is so amazing. The mosaic mural progressed so much from when I saw it a few weeks ago. Your students did use all of the habits of mind to get the work planned and implemented. They really worked/collaborated so beautifully. They must be very proud!

  4. I am so happy this came to fruition. See my posts on the first two pictures that show stages of development of the mosaic.
